Georgi Bozhilov
Georgi Yordanov Bozhilov, also known by his nickname "Slona" ("The Elephant"), was born on June 13, 1935 in Plovdiv. In 1959, he graduated in Decorative-monumental painting in VIII "N. Pavlovich", in the class of Prof. Georgi Bogdanov. In that year, he participated in the First International Biennale of Young Artists held in Paris. Since 1960, he has participated in group art exhibitions of the SBH. During his lifetime, he held over 25 solo exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad (USSR, Turkey, Poland).
Together with Encho Pironkov, Dimitar Kirov, Ioan Leviev, Kolyu Vitkovski, Hristo Stefanov and Georgi Boyadzhiev - Boyajana, Bozhilov is one of the artists from the so-called "Plovdiv School of the 1960s".
He works mainly in the field of easel painting. Creates portraits, landscapes, figurative compositions. Slona's paintings convey the sense of the artist's refined manner and free-spirited spirit. They often reflect both concrete images from reality and the disintegration of fictitious reality into primarily abstract images.
Some monumental applied works in his hometown are also his work - a mural in the "Ivan Vazov" public library, a mosaic in the Central Post Office, sgraffito at the Art Gallery in Old Plovdiv, shields.
He was awarded the SBH award in 1964 and the title "Honored Artist" in 1979. On May 30, 2001, at the age of 66, Bozhilov died in a car accident on the way from Burgas to Tsarevo, where he was supposed to attend the opening of his exhibition.
