Dimitar Kirov

Dimitar Kirov, also known as DiCiro, was born on May 20, 1935 in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1959, he graduated in Monumental and Decorative Painting at the Art Academy, Sofia, in the class of Prof. Georgi Bogdanov. Works in the field of painting and monumental art. Together with Ioan Leviev, Georgi Bozhilov, Lyuben Dimanov, etc., DiKiro is part of the group of Plovdiv artists, considered in the 60s of the 20th century as conductors of Western culture in art, as eccentric and provocative artists, not subject to the clichés of socialist realism. Dimitar Kirov's artistic style is often associated with the explosion of colors filling his canvases, frescoes, mosaics and sgraffitos. Several cycles can be conditionally distinguished in his work. In the 1950s and 1960s, his paintings were thematically directed against the ideologues of the era, imprisoning artistic expression.Later, the image of the graceful ballerina appeared in his canvases, inspired by the muse of his life - Rusalia. The works dedicated to the art of music also have a special lyricism - DiCiro recreates the sonorous harmonies through bright colors, thus making a unique musical interpretation of the painting. During his creative journey, the artist dwells repeatedly on the subject of the past - he is moved by both ancient and mythological time (the cycle "Orpheus"), as well as legends and layers in Bulgarian history (the cycle "Far in History"). The layered image of the characters is characteristic here - DiCiro also uses this technique when depicting the martyred saints in the "Icons" and "Cross" cycles. He puts a particularly deep feeling into painting landscapes from the three cities that have remained forever in his heart - Plovdiv, Istanbul and Paris.

Dimitar Kirov is the recipient of numerous national and international honorary awards and titles. His works are in museums, private collections in Bulgaria and all over the world.

He died on October 23, 2008 in Sofia.
